There’s something magical about family vacations — the slower mornings, the spontaneous ice cream stops, the memories made away from the daily grind. But if you’re anything like me, coming back home can feel like hitting a wall. The laundry pile is scary, the inbox is overflowing, and the structure you left behind suddenly feels like a stranger.
But here’s the thing: just because vacation is over doesn’t mean the joy, rest, and connection have to be. You can get back into routine without burnout — and even find new things to look forward to in the process.
Here’s how I reset after vacation, find my rhythm again, and stay energized post-getaway:
1. Give Yourself a Buffer Day (If You Can)
If possible, plan to return home a day before you have to dive back into work, school drop-offs, or regular responsibilities. A buffer day helps you ease back into life instead of feeling like you’re playing catch-up from minute one. Use this day to unpack, grocery shop, and get a loose plan together for the week ahead.
2. Start with One Anchor Habit
Instead of trying to jump back into everything — workouts, meal prep, early mornings, screen-free evenings — choose one anchor habit that grounds you. For me, it’s a daily workout. For you, it might be a green smoothie or a 10-minute journaling session. Once that’s solid, the other habits will fall back into place more naturally.
3. Reflect, Don’t Regret
Yes, you might have indulged more than usual on vacation. (Isn’t that part of the fun?) Instead of falling into the “I need to make up for it” trap, take a moment to reflect. What felt really good about vacation? What moments made you feel most like yourself? Let those guide how you shape your post-vacation routine.
4. Tidy Spaces, Clear Mind
Unpacking may not be glamorous, but reclaiming your space matters. Take 30 minutes to declutter the kitchen counter, toss in a load of laundry, or set up your favorite corner for a fresh week. A tidy environment signals your brain that it’s time to reset.
5. Find a New Mini-Milestone to Look Forward To
Just because the vacation is over doesn’t mean the excitement has to end. Plan something small but meaningful in the next 1-2 weeks: a date night, a solo hike, a Saturday morning coffee run with no kids in tow. Having something to look forward to can shift your mindset from “vacation’s over” to “there’s still joy in my everyday.”
6. Ease Back into Movement
If you took a break from your workouts, be kind to your body. Choose movement that feels nourishing, not punishing. Go for a walk, take a stretch class, or do a lighter version of your usual workout. The goal is to reconnect with your body, not punish it.
7. Hydrate, Nourish, Sleep
Travel, especially with kids, can leave your body feeling depleted. Focus on the basics: drink more water, add in colorful veggies, and prioritize sleep where you can. This simple trio can make a huge difference in how quickly you bounce back.
Final Thoughts: Life Is the Routine
Vacations are amazing, but they’re not the only time we get to feel joy, connection, and peace. Those feelings can be part of your everyday life — with a little intention.
So here’s to getting back into routine not with dread, but with gratitude. You made memories, you rested, and now you’re stronger for it. Let’s take the best parts of vacation and infuse them into real life — one mindful moment at a time.
